The Direct Method
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce myself. My name is Benjawan Srinirat. I’m a third years student in English major at faculty of Education, Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. Today I’m going to talk about the direct method. I will speak for 15 minutes.
My purpose of the presentation is to expain about the direct method I have devided my presentation into 4 parts. In the first part, I will talk about the objective of the direct method. In the next section, I will talk about the key features of the direct method. In the parts three, I’m going to talk about the typical technique of the direct method. In the last part, I would like to talk about conclusion of the direct method. Ok, everybody look at this ppt. together.
Ok. Now let us the first part is the objective of the direct method. Ok. Let’s see. The basic premise of the Direct Method is that students will learn to communicate in the target language, partly by learning how to think in that language and by not involving L1 in the language learning process whatsoever. Objectives include teaching the students how to use the language spontaneously and orally, linking meaning with the target language through the use of realia, pictures or pantomime. There is to be a direct connection between concepts and the language to be learned. That’s all I would like to say about the objective of direct method.
Now, let us turn to next section is key features, according to Richards and Rodgers, there are 8 features : first, Classroom instruction is conducted exclusively in the target language. Second, Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught. Third, Oral communication skills are built up in a carefully traded progression organized around question-and-answer exchanges between teachers and students in small, intensive classes. Fourth, Grammar is taught inductively. Then, New, teaching points are taught through modeling and practice. Next, Concrete vocabulary is taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures; abstract vocabulary is taught by association of ideas. Seventh, Both speech and listening comprehension are taught. Finally, Correct pronunciation and grammar are emphasized.
This’s all I would like to talk about key features of the direct method, now let us turn to the part three, that is typical techniques of the direct method, according to Diane Larsen-Freeman, in her book Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching, there are 7 techniques : First, Reading Aloud, for example Reading sections of passages, plays or dialogs out loud. Second, Question and Answer Exercise, for example Asking questions in the target language and having students answer in full sentences. Third, Student Self-Correction, for example Teacher facilitates opportunities for students to self correct using follow-up questions, tone, etc. Fourth, Conversation Practice, for example Teacher asks students and students ask students questions using the target language. Fifth, Fill-in-the-blank Exercise, for example Items use target language only and inductive rather than explicit grammar rules. Sixth, Dictation, for example Teacher reads passage aloud various amount of times at various tempos, students writing down what they hear. And the last one, Paragraph Writing, for example Students write paragraphs in their own words using the target language and various models.
Now, in the last part. I would like to conclusion of the direct method. Now that you have considered the principles and the techniques of the direct method somewhat, see what you can find of use for your own teaching situation.
Do you have any Question?
