Careers in Special Education
Special Education can be a special opportunity for teachers.
One of the more unique challenges in the field of education is the area known as “special education.” This general term usually refers to teachers who work with students with different types of disabilities requiring specialized or individualized teaching approaches and techniques.
Disabilities that might qualify a student for the designation special education include speech or language impairments, mental retardation, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments or other disabilities. Keep in mind, special education students can be any age. In recent years, special education students have begun to be more integrated into general education classrooms. In these cases, the special education teacher would work with the general education teacher to design curriculum and activities appropriate for the special education student.
Many colleges, universities and other educational institutions offer degree programs in special education at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree levels. Special education teachers usually have slightly longer periods of training than do general education teachers. The courses in a special education degree curriculum might include: educational psychology, legal issues of special education, and child growth and development.
Some special education degree programs require concentration, while others offer generalized special education degrees or a course of study in several specialized areas. Most students become student teachers, usually under the supervision of a certified teacher and an academic advisor, during the final stage of their academic studies.
In general, there are not enough graduates from education programs to meet the needs of schools for special education teachers. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require licensing of special education teachers.
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that demand for special education teachers will grow faster than average for all professions through 2014. The Department predicts growth somewhere in the vicinity of 20% for the special education profession. Many areas of the country report difficulty finding special education teachers. The number of students classified as special education has grown in recent years as the process of identifying disabilities has become more precise, with many students identified and diagnosed at an earlier age. Also, more parents will be seeking special help for children who do not meet the standards of today’s educational system, for whatever reason. All these factors fuel demand for special education teachers.
Special education teachers require patience, compassion, and an ability to think creatively in dealing with students with varied learning disabilities by applying varied teaching methods and techniques. Good communication skills are also a must as special education teachers must interact regularly with students as well as other faculty, parents, and administrators.
